Backpacker store closing down. Pillage! was created by Scotsman
Backpackers Supply in Tacoma are closing down and selling everything.
Their sale starts July 5th and each week the discounts go up. They call it a gamblers sale.
However I was there yesterday and they are selling their rental skis boots , skis, everything.
Prices are unbelievable.
I picked up a pair of BD Velvets with Fritshci Bindings (The latest version) for my wife for $350.
They looked like they had been used twice and are perfect.
You just walk into the back and ask for the price on any pair you like.
They sold 5 pairs of coombacks yesterday.
Some incredible deals.

I bought a PIT BOSS avy shovel that I have lusted after for 4 years and there was only one left.
Seemingly, the Bellview ( Marmot Mountain Works)store will remain open, at least for a while.

a real bummer to see the shop closing down.  No REI middle of the road fluff stuff here, always the real goods.  Really good folks, too - people who've walked the talk..  Bought my first Marmot jacket from Lock when he had a single store (forget the name, now) a few blocks away up on Pine street.  Marginally funny that REI got it's start on Pine street in Seattle ~ loved that store, too, back then...

Yep , I agree.
I purposely bought a lot of my stuff there even when I could have got a discount at REI as they stocked all the little stuff that REI doesn't. Ski tuning stuff, skin tails etc.
Very sad to see it go and that REI Tacoma store is absolutely useless for ski gear.
At lease we have the new Sturdevant's in Tacoma but I wish they'd start stocking some of the stuff that Backpackers was good for and more backcountry stuff and of course Dynafit bindings and skis.
Do you hear me Keith?? ;D

Thanks for buying that!

I went by there today and they had several rental skis still there, lots of XC skis, some climbing skin rentals for sale. Most skis shorter than 175, but a Kailas and older havoc in 185. I like the Gambler theme.
I agree that REI's satellite store in Tacoma is just a waste of retail space for the outdoor enthusiast.  REI should diversify and pull back to the roots like Coke did with Coke Classic and open a store more oriented to climbing, hiking and snow sports with quality useful gear like AMH in Anchorage. But I guess that would not be good business and it is best to sell mostly middle of the road gear.
I will miss that shop for gear, but like you say maybe SkiMart can pick up the slack. The bad thing is that most orders for hard gear are done earlier in the year for delivery in the fall.

I'm bummed to see them go too, but knew it was coming. Like Scotsman, I've bought a lot of stuff there over the years just because I wanted to see them stay in business, but have to say they kind of shot themselves in the foot. My last experience there was this spring when I asked to buy a pair of Voile crampons for the "one item 20% off" sale and was told I'd pay full price because they had to get them from the Seattle store. Bought them at REI for 20% off! At least at REI you can get anything they offer and pick it up free of shipping fees at the Tacoma store.
