I use one of the old whippits and it's great for an alpenstock/second walking axe when combined with a real ice axe or just when you need just a little more traction on the up.  Only problem is that over time the long metal attachment for the axe head have started to make a horrible creaking noise everytime I plant the pole, weight it and move forward.  I've tried duck tape and such without success and after awhile it drives me a little crazy  ???

The new ones are nice and when I wreck the whippit pole I'll switch to the one with non-removable head.

Didn't someone self arrest on Granite Mt the year before last with one?

I find them useful for camera work on steeper terrain. I can jam them into hard snow. I love them for climbing. I also like them for forest schwacking. I reach up and use them often to pull me up a slope for a whippet assist ;-) For falls they are great in preventing them before they happen. Think of them as stabilizers. I don't worry about them stabbing me, but then again I'm skiing steep terrain too  ;D

I have two...origionally, one for my short buddy who flies out from Da' UP. I've taken to bringing them both, unless somebody else wants to rent it for the price of a good beer for the day.
