The American Alps Legacy Project has reduced it's North Cascades Nat'l Park expansion proposals by about a third, mainly by dropping a large area east of Washington Pass:

A good decision on their part.

In my above post the words "rich boy" is is used to decribe us, americans who can afford to consume oil like its water, 6.6billion barrells a years worth. The use of these words is not intended to single out any particular individual. I also wanted to point out that I find it ironic that someone would fly around the world, using large amounts of carbon, to deliver a mesage about climate change. I did vote for Al and beleive he is sincere.

No I'm not willing to give up heli-skiing because the hydrocarbons saved will have absolutely NO effect on the planet. If ever helicopter skiing was immediately stopped everywhere... it would have NO effect on climate change.
The main problem with climate change/saving mother earth is all the little humans we keep popping out.
Population growth and the ever increasing energy demands/usage are the problem.
If you want to save the planet.. go heliskiing and stop facking breeding!
Everybody with more than one kid should have to pay increased taxes!

I agree with you freeskiguy. I don't care if you use a hemp bag for your groceries...recycle your coffee grounds... are into the urban chicken moment... only ride your snowmobiles on logging roads.... hike for all your turns....if you drive to the trailhead in your 94 subaru with ironic political stickers on it.... contribute to the Sierra Club...... IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE KID AND DRIVE OR OWN A CAR WHILE SELF-CONGRATULATING YOURSELF ON YOUR ECOLOGICAL GOODNESS.... YOU ARE A HYPOCRITE.

Wouldn't 2 kids/couple be population neutral?

It depends.

It's partly a function of at what age you have the children. Two kids @35 years of age is a vastly different effect than two kids @20 years of age. If a generation has kids later on average than the prior generation, then 2 kids will tend to be population reducing.

If the life expectancy of the population is increasing, then absent other facts having 2 kids/couple will increase population, at least for a time.

If a population has many many young kinds, then they all start having 2 kids each, this can greatly increase population.

There is no question that one kid will increase the population less than two will.
