Mellow tour out of Whistler? was created by DG
Hi,
We're heading up on a first-time trip to Whistler later this week (stoked!) We'll mostly be lift skiing, but thought of taking one day to tour if the conditions are okay. With the recent winter-like weather and my unfamiliarity with the area, we'd only tour if there was a conservative route (not too steep or avy prone). I'm wondering if anyone knows of something like that out of the village? Decker Mountain looks fairly benign on the topos (as accessed via a single-ride ticket up to Blackcomb Glacier, over the saddle, and up Decker glacier). but maps can sometimes hide steep pitches and terrain traps.
Thanks -

Pick up Baldwin's annotated map from Escape Route in the Village or you can hire a guide there too if you can't read a map.

Agreed - that map is a must-have for your intentions. As for Decker - just like anything worth skiing outside the controlled resort, you'll of course have some avy potential and need your own ability to judge on the day you go. But at any rate, there are some fine lines off Decker to be sure, as well as multiple interesting ways back to the resort from there. If you run across Gerard while you're out there (French expat who lives in Whistlter, or at least did a few years back) see if he'll show you his favored route back (also some avy potential...).
The map will give you multiple other notions.

I love it - a tour with a mission (seek out the Frenchman near the high pass and he will provide you with your route back to the safe house in the valley). Seriously, thanks for the tips.
