My understanding is that the RECCO works pretty well from the heli, but I haven't had training with it yet myself. More and more gear is coming with the reflectors built into it, as Larry mentioned (including my resort ski jacket). Getting a RECCO "pinger" on scene in time to help has always been my concern, but having one on SC's Huey is a big step in the right direction, especially if more manufacturers start including the reflector, or a way to incorporate it.

R.E.C.C.O is a great system for quickly and efficiently finding victims.

Even if the victim is deceased, the speed at which R.E.C.C.O operates makes it possible for SAR personnel to enter and exit quickly ... which is, according to Martha Stewart, a good thing.

R.E.C.C.O isn't really a system for live recovery - except at ski areas.

Also, the White Book:

Absolutely dead on!! which is why I got so pissed off at the recent news reports about the Vermonters and the news saying they had avalanche beacons woven into their clothes. I came to work next day and a lot of the people who I work with who snowmobile where asking me where to buy these "special clothes" so they wouldn't have to buy a beacon.!!!!!
As PNW Brit says RECCO for BC= body recovery device.

I think Kevin Carter's parents, (one of the three snowboarders who died in Union Creek basin in '07) purchased one of these for use (locally) in a helicopter. A very generous gift that we would rather it collect dust, but it is a great tool for searchers if they can get a copter in and need to use it.

I watched that news clip and it is a bit misleading.
The female announcer says it makes your winter trips into the snow a little safer.
WRONG...
It makes the searchers trip a little bit safer, so they can find your body, that statement was misleading.
