PNW night touring? was created by skee17
I was down doing some touring in Vail Pass, CO last weekend and the whole rage was getting out for moonlight tours. Granted, it was a full moon (brightest of the year) and you could see better than in some overcast conditions here. The thought of being able to ski AFTER the sun went down made me a) giddy like a school girl, b) jealous of the clear skies, and c) ponder the idea of some quick tours mid-week after work.

So, I was just curious to know if anyone had explored out after dark on some of the shorter/easier/safer tours around here. Or any thoughts/suggestions about the idea would be interesting too.

My initial idea was hitting Snoq pass on a clear night, to try and take advantage of some residual light from the mountain. Maybe Kendall ridge?

I like Mazama ridge at Paradise, West facing, mellow grade, take a run with the fox and the bobcat.

I tour Hyak by cover of night all the time. A lot of other people do this too. New moon, full moon, or no moon.

If you want the aid of the lights from the ski area just remember the lights are turned off at 10:30.

I've been known to haul my tent out to the Swift-Wells creek divide to ski the east side of Ptarmigan Peak in moonlight.

I have friends in Alaska that ski bc runs by headlamp. Flat light conditions during the day turn into a nice run with a light. He makes his own light, but basically it's a cycling light (ultra bright).

I've skied in the Tetons by headlamp (coming off a winter climb)--it's fun and different, but the breakable crust on XCD's sucked.

I've done night tours w/ my mtn bike HID headlamp (Nightrider w/ 4 hour burn time) many times. If you're on runs you know, you can pretty much as fast as in daylight. Good fun to go night skiing at Alpy and then do the quick skin over to the lower BC gate and lap those lines.
