Snoqualmie Pass Backcountry! Help a brother out! was created by BSHB
Hey guys, my name is Ben and my friend Andy and I are doing a project for our Environmental Resource management class at the UW. We're doing a study of the backcountry snow sport opportunities in the Snoqualmie pass area.
I know some of you are sitting at your office desk on tay, so if you're not working you can probably help us out!
We need some help from you guys who have been going up alot in the last year because we have been for the most part slaving in classrooms. Here is a super quick questionaire, just to get a good idea of what your experience was, so we can build up some data w/o heckling you on the mountain! PLEASE REPLY TO THIS, as it would save us literally months of time.
PRAY FOR SNOW : )
Ben.
Questionnaire:
a. Male or Female?
b. Age?
c. Rando, Tele, or Splitboard? (Snowshoers and xc ski too)
d. Do you ski with Partners? if so, are they friends, or do you ski with a significant other?
e. What is your favorite backcountry area in the snoqualmie pass region? Why is it your favorite? Favorite routes? (1 or 2 sentences)
f. What features enhance or detract from this experience?
g. Which months out of the year do you ski there (all?)?
h. Why do you ski in the backcountry instead of at resorts? (1 sentence)
i. Have you noticed a decrease in the snowpack/quality of skiing on it in the last 5 years? What does this mean to you? (1-2 sentences)
j. Any other fun facts/comments/2bits you guys wanna throw at us, cool pictures, stories, concerns, we would greatly appreciate.

a. Male
b. 50
c. Rando
d. Usually with partners, both friends and SO, and sometimes friends or other sorts of associates of friends
e. for me to know and you to find out ("stashworthiness protocol" - I can only tell you by bringing you there
f. Great snow and/or great weather enhances the experience (great snow on a storm day is fine...)
g. generally December - April, outside of that range, I'm usually going elsewhere
h. I do both, but prefer moving myself uphill, quiet contemplation of my surroundings, and fresh tracks (plus summit lounging with fun partners)
i. This is fuzzy to me. I think so, but I might say I've noticed that the past few years were worse than the prior several, if that makes sense. I agree with an earlier poster that this has been more marked down lower (somewhat at 4K, quite a bit at 2.5K)
j. The snow down low is often sub-optimal, but on most routes I've done, descending through it is brief, and I'd rather spend time climbing and descending that extra bit than driving a few more hours roundtrip... (but the snow at Snoqualmie is always bad, everywhere - don't waste your time going up there!

a. Male or Female?
Male
b. Age?
Old enough to have owned a pair of Secura Fix adapters when they were new
c. Rando, Tele, or Splitboard? (Snowshoers and xc ski too)
Was tele, now Rando
d. Do you ski with Partners? if so, are they friends, or do you ski with a significant other?
I always ski with partners, friends who's backcountry judgment I trust and are fun to share a beer with afterwords
e. What is your favorite backcountry area in the snoqualmie pass region? Why is it your favorite? Favorite routes? (1 or 2 sentences)
Chair Peak and surrounding area. It has a combination of challenging terrain, beautiful scenery.
f. What features enhance or detract from this experience?
Enhance: every time I get back in there I can't believe the trail head was only 30 minutes from my driveway...
Detract: sometimes too many other parties can ruin the experience. Also, Conditions tend to be either stellar or horrible; there doesn't seem to be an in between like other parts of the Cascades
g. Which months out of the year do you ski there (all?)?
November through May
h. Why do you ski in the backcountry instead of at resorts? (1 sentence)
I have always done both, but as I have gotten older I have found a full day of touring to be easier on my body than a day riding lifts.
i. Have you noticed a decrease in the snowpack/quality of skiing on it in the last 5 years? What does this mean to you? (1-2 sentences)
No, we seem to be cycling through snow years the way I remember it as far back as the 70's; super deep La Nina years and meager El Nino years.
j. Any other fun facts/comments/2bits you guys wanna throw at us, cool pictures, stories, concerns, we would greatly appreciate.
I hope you guys don't plan on turning this kind of research into a career. It could lead to all kinds of paid "fact finding" expeditions...
