It will open, probably, but with 7 inches of new now and up to 1 foot expected with some high winds I wouldn't expect it to open before noon. If less snow is received it should open by 11. If a plow breaks down, it won't open.

The Park Service seems to be putting in extra effort on their service at the Longmire gate this year in two areas:
1. If there is not much road clear to do they seem to try harder now than in years past to get the road open as soon as practicable. for example this morning they reportedly opened the gate at 7 am. Gate openings that early in winter were almost unheard of in years past, regardless of the road condition.
2. They are also trying very hard to get the weather and road conditions (with a forecast gate opening time) recordings up earlier. Most weekends I've checked lately they have had the recording up by 6 am or shortly thereafter. I find this a huge benefit for last minute trip planning.
So as Andy points out, watching the telemetry for total overnight snowfall is a good indication of how much they might have to do to get the road cleared. That, along with the earlier recorded gate opening prognostication makes it a lot better than just heading fro Rainier and taking your chances.
