Ultralight weather radios? was created by Charlie Hagedorn
Does anyone know of a source for an Ipod-shuffle sized (or smaller) weather radio? A half hour spent surfing the web didn't turn anything up. A late night epiphany convinced me that
Lowell
and Will, who's suggested carrying one several times, have a point. I'm happy to tolerate two hours or less of battery life.
The chips exist, but I'd rather be skiing than designing and debugging a board to make one.

My limited experience suggests that weatheradios are made and sold only by the worst electronics manufacturers on the planet (e.g. Radioshack). If you can find a nice modern one that is light and works well I'd be very eager to hear about it. In recent years I've carried a ham radio that enabled me to listen to the weather band. But that's overkill.

Many of the FRS radios have the feature that listens to the NOAA weather broadcasts. It seems like motorola makes the most variations. REI usually has them for sale. Those are the smallest ones that I know of.

I bought a Midland HH50 at REI a couple of years ago, it was by far the smallest I could find, and cheap too. Apparently, they no longer carry it:

www.rei.com/product/761144
But Midland's site still shows it, on SALE for $19.99: www.midlandradio.com/Camping.PI7/HH50
And Google product search shows lots of even cheaper prices: www.google.com/products?q=Midland+HH50&scoring=p
It works OK, the reception and sound quality is not the greatest, but I've only used it in the mountains (plus testing inside at home) so it might not be the radio's fault. I've been able to find a usable weather radio signal most times I've used it in the mountains. The antenna does telescope out about 4". At 3 oz including batteries, the weight is certainly right.
