Wasatch Backcountry was created by nesterg
Anyone know a good online info source for Wasatch backcountry tours or have any personal recommendations?
I'm looking for some relatively close in backcountry in big or little cottonwood canyons.

I bought these two guide books when I first moved to the Wasatch and they were incredibly useful. Wasatch Touring, Kirkham's and probably REI in SLC carry them. Andrew McLean's Shooting Gallery is a guide to "extreme" skiing in the Wasatch. Happy touring!

You can sometimes find used versions of the Wasatch touring books in book stores. I found a copy of the older version (before the book was split into multiple volumes) in a store on Phinney Ridge a few years ago for $5. There are also excellent "Euro style" ski touring maps published of the Wasatch, topo maps with common ski routes marked. Two maps cover Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. They also mark the place of previous avalanche fatalities, sobering to think about a dozen or so lives lost on the same slope over the years.

This site usually has up to date trip reports: www.wowasatch.com/
There is also usually a season long running thread with current info on telemarktips.
I'd recommend getting at least the ski maps and reading the latest avi/weather reports at utahavalanchecenter.org/ , then heading up to Alta and following the skin track either to Flagstaff Mtn or Pole Line Pass on a clear day. Plenty of options from there. Careful though, this gets you into serious avi terrain very quickly, evidenced by all the fatality markings on the maps on those slopes.
Unfortunately not much snow there now.. Hopefully they get a few big dumps before our annual trip Christmas - New Year's week.

Depending on how adventurous you are:

I lived/worked in Little Cottonwood for 6 years so I could tell you more. Look at linking up some canyons and consider the free (cheap) bus in each canyon and between. Days fork in BCC is nice and the White Pine trailhead in LCC will keep you occupied for days.
Wear sunscreen too.
