I have had the pleasure of photographing Western Larches in their golden goodness, but guessing when the event will happen is as precise as figuring when the first great day of powder skiing will occur. Early October is usually when the "deciduous conifers" turn from green to gold and then drop their needles. It appears that Mother Nature is little slow this year , but did "treat" us to some early snow, which is ,of course, good news to us skiers.

I should have added that this stand of subalpine larch that we camped in is thought to have some of the oldest trees in Canada. My SPOT devise points out the precise location of our camp. maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&...57&ie=UTF8&z=12&om=1

Hey Bob, excellent pictures on your Picasa. Mount Frosty itself looks awesome in this pic, is it a summit ski destination?

It is just about real ski season again!

I met a fellow, who said that he had skied to Mt.Frosty, when I last climbed it in 2006. His party had used the other route from the Windy Joe/PCT parking lot. www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ecmanning/frosty.html

Highway 3 to Manning Park is a major west-east B.C. route which remains open all winter. The link below refers to the commercial aspects of skiing near Mount Frosty which use the same access roads. Frosty can be seen in the background of the terrain park photo. I do not have any personal experience on which of the two routes up to Mt.Frosty would be better in the winter/spring .
