Hi Tayers:
Been a while since my last post, however thought I'd let all know about a movement afoot. Its success depends on the kindness of strangers, and the passion of skiers/snowboarders. Please check out Shamesmtncoop.com, and the facebook site. Thanks all!

Hi NWBCer,
FYI, promo posts and the like should probably get approval from Charles, if you didn't check in with him. I like the idea behind Shames, but it seems to fall into that category a bit...

Really hope that it will be allowed some flexibilty by the powers that be here.

Reminds me of Mad River Glen going coop back in 1995 back home in VT. They're still going strong - I hope Shames can pull it off.

Marcus is right, the poster should have inquired before posting this as it does fall in a gray area. If the poster had inquired, it would have given him/her a chance to explain why this is an acceptable post on this forum, and we could have had a discussion about this in a non-public way.
NWBCer: would you please explain here why you believe your post did not need to go the normal pre-approval route?
Please note that my comments are not a judgment about whether or not this is an acceptable post. The issue is procedure: if we don't have a procedure, and stick to it, for this type of post then we could easily have a problem in the future.

Charles, I'm guessing he didn't know as he's not a regular poster.
I know NWBCer, he was the gentleman who let me housesit for him the year I spent a month at Shames.
I guy more in tune with the philosophy of TAY would be hard to find.
The Shames Mountain Coop is an attempt to get a dialog started on turning the Shames Mountian Ski are in Terrace into a co-op or a non-profit. The mountain has been for sales for years and has been kept alive by generous support by it's board of Directors who have made no money but contributed a lot.
Why is Shames special? It's only got an old double that leads to a T-Bar and has good but limited in-bounds skiing and it only opens Wed-Sunday. It's a 23 hr drive from Seattle or a $510 round trip air fare with a change in Vancouver.
Well Shames is Baker on steroids and with a short skin from the top of the T-bar, one can get on a ridge like Shuksan Arm that leads to some of the most incredible terrain I have ever skied. Some may remember my trip when Jerry and Jen White joined me with my son. We were virtually adopted by the locals who showed us the goods , invited me to their houses on a daily basis and gave me one of the best experiences of my life.
Now I am not saying anybody should rush out and buy- shares in this venture as it is speculative at best and has many problems to solve but as an example of how a group of skiers are using the interweb to try and change how things are done , it's certainly worth reading about and making up your own minds or contributing to the discussion.
It has to support of many locals and it will be interesting to see what develops or if any beneficial tangents result of the efforts.
The effort was started by an expat skier in Argentina who I met during my recent visit to Bariloche and runs a property management business down there and is a passionate BC skier and former guide. He and his wife have a website called " Living in Patagonia" that I often browse to see what's happening in their lives and in SA. He talked to me about Shames but I was not part of his start up effort. He has been communicating with me about what Terrace and Shames is like and I put him in contact with a couple of very well-respected locals, one of whom is a professional avalanche forecaster .
