Recommendation for GPS was created by Alexander
Hi Everyone,

I think it is time to buy a GPS, but I have no experience with these things. I'll need it mainly for skiing, usually day trips, maybe one or two multi day traverses per year.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Alex

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx -- or Vista HCx if you want the digital compass (which still is not a perfect substitute for a traditional separate sighting mirror compass) and/or integrated barometric altimeter (which I prefer to keep on my wrist watch).
Or the equivalent Garmin 60Cx/60CSx if you want a bigger screen.
Free Garmin-compatible 24k-level maps (albeit vector-based, not raster):

If you end up with the Vista or the legend I would ge5 the HCX model for sure. I have the Vista HCX and love it. It still tracks while in my pack in the woods.

Yes, good point -- I should have added that all those annoying letter designations after the model name are very important, since Garmin has gone through various iterations, with significant improvements.
