Skied the Flett Headwall July 20th, 2008 (and then didn't ski in August, ending a near 5 year streak)

and the Flett and Russell over the July 4th weekend in 2006 (nice)

Also skied it, or attempted to, in August of 05-  huge mistake and not recommended that late in the season.

But mid-July 'should' be OK.

You'll need to obtain a camping permitt at the Carbon River (think that's the name) ranger station.  Camping in Spray park is excellent and the views are outstanding.

Thanks for the tips.  After researching past trip reports, Amar's site and looking at maps, I think the Flett and Russell will be our first choice.  I've been intrigued with seeing that area for a few years now, and camping at Spray looks beautiful.  If time allows, we might check out the Fryingpan Glacier or Van Trump as well.  From the beta, it looks like the snowpack should be decent around July 13-17 (hopefully the weather cooperates).

If anyone's looking for route conditions on the Central Oregon Volcanoes anytime in the future - drop me a pm.  Thanks,

Matt

Beware the mosquitoes in Spray Park. Lotta pools there for them to breed and they're as big as sparrows. Trust me on this. ;)
Take mucho DEET or 12 gauge shotgun!

Crap! I can't wait - they love me too. I suppose I'm used to it though, they get especially bad at Mt. Scott and South Sister. After a Mt. Scott (Crater Lake) trip a few years ago in June I counted 83 bites on my arms and shoulders (I've not seen it that bad since!). I'll be packin' DEET!
