The lady at the Hood River Ranger Dist said today (6-15-09) that the Cloud Cap road is closed due to" Fire Rehab" until late August.
She recommended hiking from the Cooper Spur Ski Area.
...any confirmation or otherwise would be great!

That will be quite a slog I believe. That is sort of disappointing...but maybe checking a map would show that the extra hike isn't so much. Write a TR if you go-- that is lovely side of the mountain for sure...

I seem to recall this discussion from last year.......
Dang! Anyone know off the top of their head how far it is from the Elk Cove TH to get to the Snowdome? If not I'll look at the map later tonight.

We were at Hood on Friday, 6/12. The Cloud Cap road was indeed closed and we were told that it would remain so for some time. We hiked up the trail from the trail head to the Tilly Jane area. Snow began at Tilly Jane; we skinned a little way up Cooper Spur from the vicinity of the A-frame. The snow was less than ideal because of rain the previous evening, warm temperatures, and no freezing. Around 12:45 while we were in a cloud, we heard a terrific roar. Later, when there was an opening, we saw that the northeast side of the mountain had been swept by avalanches - the Newton-Clark glacier (I think) and slopes to the north of it. An incredible sight!
