ski reccomendations for tomorrow out of Seattle?

So we are two skiers in Seattle for the week visiting some friends and looking to do some spring touring. We are on the less experienced end of things, have all the required equipment (dyanfits, avalanche gear, ski crampons, GPS, etc...) and a head on our shoulders. My default option is the Muir snowfields area which I haven't yet visited. We are looking to make some mellow turns, take advantage of the clearing weather, enjoy the scenery, not fall into a crevasse and not get crushed by a wet slide. The new snow and changing freezing levels have me a bit perplexed, but I imagine that sticking to low angle areas will be the best bet. We also have climbing permits for Mt St. Helens on Monday. (Memorial day, whoops!)

So any other options and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

The Snowfield's an excellent choice. Pan Point's the only avy concern, mostly in the afternoon, but with a "head on your shoulders" odds are excellent that you'll manage fine. The whole rest of the route is nice and low angle. Be more than a little prepared for a whiteout. Non-weekdays, like tomorrow, will find it less crowded. Coverage is good - if you work through the windlips at Pebble Creek, you can ski from the top to the car uninterrupted. It's a great first time to go. Start early, and you'll get more time (and laps) on high! If it's clear, sunrise is worth it.

As for the MSH permit - love or hate permits, they'll keep the mountain uncrowded even on holidays...

Allright! It sounds like we are right on track then. I will keep in mind your warnings on visibility. I have gps topos and routes for the area and we will be decked out with maps, compass, emergency clothing, etc.

cheers!

Might want to print this "Get Your Bearings" document or get one at the Ranger's Station.

That document is a good resource indeed - there are people who have nevery returned from their trip to Muir. The fall line is NOT the way to get home, and it seems some folks get suckered one way or another presumably ultimately into crevasses during low vis.

Have a great visit to the area!

On a side note, does anyone have recommendations for other shorter day trips? Is the skiing near Snoqualmie any good at this time of year?

cheers
