Unplugged Binding Holes was created by climberdave
Hey all, got a question.

The bindings were removed from my Norbert Joos at the beginning of last year and the shop didn't fill the holes.  I really didn't think anything of it until now - once again the sirens call - and I'm thinking about remounting them- using different bindings and holes.  My question is - is it horrible for skis to set in storage without storage wax and unplugged holes?  The bases need a tune and the holes haven't been doused with water or anything, but could the open holes dry out the core area surrounding and compromise the strength of the ski?

So many skis so little time.

Thanks in advance,

cd

I'm not a pro ski tech but I've mounted and remounted a ton of my own XC and alpine skis and I have a lot of old house remodeling experience so I've seen my share of wood rot. That said I'll give you my opinion. I've never seen wood deteriorate due to dryness. So unless you left them leaning against the wood stove you are OK. I believe your skis have a wood core. I have some all-wood skis that are 30+ years old that are still as solid as day one. Trapped moisture is the real demon. I always plug unused holes with one of those epoxy putty sticks. Slice off a bit, knead it real well with your fingers and roll out a piece thinner that the hole. That way you can jam it in to the bottom and not have any voids. Fill the hole to the top and your good to go. I've even used that stuff to repair a holed crankcase in a motorcycle and rode it for years afterwards. Great stuff. I always carry a small chunk when I'm in the wilderness.

You're in. Meantime, scout out some sweet routes that are short and gentle going up, long and rolling going down. Always in the sun and with zero avy risk.
