DTS Tracker Question was created by Rusty Knees
Last week I went skiing with a new partner, and my beacon failed. I turned it on in the P-lot and it came on, registered "99" meaning full batteries (I assumed), but I didn't do a search test till later up the hill.

When turned to search mode, it beeped regularly, but with no change as I moved closer or farther from Mark. It also displayed ".1" in the search mode, even though the battery indicator still read 99.

When I returned home and replaced the batteries, it operates normally, when checking against my second one.
Is this unit faulty?
Anybody have any feedback?
Thanks!

What kind of batteries were you using? Alkaline is the only approved type -- that *could* be it, but that's just a guess.

Call BCA -- they were good about taking my wife's beacon back when it began to malfunction. It was out of warranty, so we got a wholesale rate on the replacement.

The receive mode on beacons is the most prone to failure, so it's definitely important to test both Tx and Rx every time out. It's a new habit for me, but your tale illustrates it well.

Hello RK, Say I know this sounds silly, but when you switched to search mode up on the hill, still having had a 99 battery strength read out, and it didn't indicate any distance change, are you sure your partner had his beacon on transmit?  New partner, maybe less beacon savvy? Or did he/she realize it, and switch back to transmit only once you were back close again - hence the reading 0.1 - which typically indicates you're as close as you can get to a transmitting beacon.  Perplexing, particularly if it worked once you got close again.  This kind of situation is why its always good to do a transmit-receive check with your partner before leaving the trail head - which accomplishes three important things. 1. Makes sure everyones batteries and beacons work, 2. Insures that each beacon's transmit and receive functions are working, and that all party beacons are reading each other (old or broken beacons may drift out of tolerance, or not work), and 3. perhaps most importantly, demonstrate that everyone in the party knows how to work their beacon, or at least know how to switch it back and forth from transmit to receive.  I always do this check right off, even with good buddies.  Lacking any of the above situations, I wouldn't trust that beacon again, unless I'd tested it in the interim a half dozen times, or sent it back to BCA for testing.  Hope this helps.

I'll chime in on this (it was me on the tour). I'm a new partner to RK, not new skier nor novice beacon user. I tested mine in the lot against RK's, his device was transmitting. My unit searched properly at that test. Switched mine back to transmit. Tested mine again on the hill after RK was getting whacky search readings and it searched properly. Switched it back to transmit. It could be that even though searching properly, the transmit function is faulty on my unit, I will check that out.

Good reminder for everyone to do full test in the parking lot, both transmit and receive.

Just checked my Tracker with a second Tracker and it is transmitting properly, so that can be ruled out as a cause. I'd second the recommendation to have the questionable unit serviced by BCA unless it had non-alkaline batteries installed.

Absolute sign of using high-voltage lithium or rechargeable batteries. Replace with alkaline immediately and your beacon will be fine. Any questions see page 10 of your Tracker DTS owner's manual or drop me a PM. I can gladly take a look at your beacon if you're in the Seattle area.

Thanks, Steve (from BCA)
