ski bum van at Snowbowl, February 11, 2009

When I parked in the lot at Snowbowl, I smelled sausage cooking and smoke coming out of a vent in the top of a van.

Met a fellow from New York who had been out on the road since January 5 living mostly in his van. He was currently working on skiing every resort in Montana.

Notice the wood stove with frying pan, bed on the left.

This is truly a ski bum's rig.

Thanks for the post and photo.  As a former New Yorker, I am encouraged to see the creativity of the next generation of ski bums.   

That puts my Vanagon to shame. I would love to have a wood stove but the pop-top presents a problem + I think I would get pulled over way too much with a big pipe sticking out the top of my VW.

that sure brings back the ski / surf / hangliding bum days. Now, retirement looms and a second lap is doable. Who'd have guessed it? tx

That's great -- makes me want to go tear the bench seats out of the Astro, carpool-ability be damned.
