Photo Limit: LeeLau and Amar's was created by Scotsman
An honest question for the administrators of this board.
I recently noticed that LeeLau's post regarding Roger's Pass that had too many pictures for the authorized photo limit, was modified by deleting the photos over the limit, presumably by a moderator.

Amar's post regarding his recent climb and ski down Mt Rainier( which was fantastic) has more photos than the authorized limit but was not edited by the moderators.

Why is this the case?
Are the photos in Amar's post displayed in a different way that makes more than 3 allowable and if so , how do you do insert them so you are within the limits prescribed?
Or is it possible to ask permission in advance to post more pictures for a significant descent which Amar's certainly was?

Just trying to understand the rules and hope that all are treated equally.

Both Amar and Lee post really inspiring trip reports, and the worst possible outcome is to annoy or discourage the people who post the best stuff.

After some searching, I found the policy at the top of the Lift Server TR board, and it reads in part:

Here's the policy for inserting photos in posts ...
... maximum of 3 photos per thread (not per post)
... These guidelines apply to all displayed photos, both those uploaded to the TAY server and those located on your own web space. If everyone follows these guidelines, then the threads will continue to load quickly enough even for those with dial-up access.

There would logically be two concerns:

1) Download time for dial up
2) Space on TAY server

Even though the policy says it makes no difference, it looks like Amar's pictures are hosted on his site while Lee's are on the TAY server, and this could be the reason for the difference in moderating.

I am guessing that concern #1 (Download time for dial up) has become moot, and perhaps should be dropped from consideration.

It is possible that a more useful going-forward limit is 3 photos per thread that are uploaded to the TAY server, because concern #2 (Space and clutter on the server, download bandwidth that has to come from the server) presumably will matter for the foreseeable future.

Not quite the whole reason, I think -- Amar's photos are thumbnailed, so TAY only has to host the small versions, though he still has many more than the posting guidelines, which are:

First post in a thread:
  Full-sized photos: maximum of 3
Each full-sized photo: maximum width 800 pixels
Thumbnail photos (via thumbnail tag): maximum of 6

Subsequent posts in a thread (replies):
  Full-sized photos: none allowed
Thumbnail photos (via thumbnail tag): maximum of 3

My guess is that Lee's post drew more attention because it had the "trash talk/BS" element, which probably drew moderator attention as a result...

Thanks for the research Marcus and Travertine. Very illuminating.

IMVHO, if the rules are going to be enforced ,then then should be enforced equally.

Agreed -- I think it's a matter of moderator time, as much as anything -- Charles is pretty much the only one running the show (and he's not paid much, if at all :))

You and Marcus are spot on, Scotty.
There's a marked shortage of moderator time and talent on this site.
It certainly seems like anyone gifted with a strong sense of equity such as yourself might be standing in line to volunteer your time and talents to improve the operation of the site and make it more fair to all concerned.
I'd gladly endorse your application were it submitted.
