Jan 08, Question re: new skins' stickiness was created by endlesswinter
A bit of a random question but given the price of new skins these days I thought I'd ask.  I just bought a new pair of skins (BD glidelite) - the 3rd pair of skins I've purchased over the years.  This pair barely held to my skis, or each other, last weekend -- a dramatic difference from the days where you would play tug-o-war w/ your partner just to get them seperated.

My friend and I were both on new rigs (new skis & skins) and both noticed that the sticking power of these new skins were very weak.   The new glue seems different from my other pairs old skins.  After 4 days of room tempature they are a bit more sticky but still nothing like I've previously experienced with new skins.

My question:  does the glue get tackier w/ use, is the new glue just weaker these days, or did I get a bum set of skins?

Glue doesn't really get tackier with use, but it will stick better in some temperatures than others. You can reglue them at little expense (and great mess) with a little patience.

Some glues are better at certain temperatures, too -- last weekend in -16 C we had some complete glue failures and some that were sticking just fine. Age of the glue and how well it's been cared for plays a part too, of course.

If memory serves, old Ascention purple-power skins and many batches of G3 skins had major glue problems (also why climbingskinsdirect had a long startup time). I'd email BD and ask. They have been amazing with customer service- I broke a Stopper aid climbing a few years ago, and they pulled tested a bunch of archived ones from the same batch, and send me a full report of their findings. Pretty slick.
