Goodbye Paradise? was created by Gary Vogt
CH 5 is forecasting 10-20 inches of rain up to at least 7000' for the west slopes of the Cascades Tuesday through Thursday. Sounds like a re-run of the conditions that resulted in the six-month closure in 2006, but let's hope not!

Browsing NWS this morning, it seems CH 5 exaggerated the threat a bit. Perhaps they (or I) mixed up the Olympic (up to 20") and Cascade (up to 10") rainfall forecasts. Ch 5's 7K freezing level was probably also for the Olympics. Still, there's an awful lot of low elevation snow, fortunately no longer on my roof, and the Park has made little progress reinforcing the road. At least this should settle the snowpack & reduce the avy hazard in the long term.

Near record flows being projected for the Nisqually; makes one wonder how those nice little culverts at Kautz Creek are going to fare ... flows are projected to be about the same as the flows last Nov (2008) that caused a brief closure of the park; avy projections are for extreme, 6-10 ft slides.
Also, no attempts have been made to repair Nov's damage to the MRNP Gateway Levee ($750, 000 worth of damage) or to the damage done to the riprap under SR706 0.5 miles inside the Nisqually Entrance. Let us all pray that Lord Obama stays his hand and produces an uneventful event.

The news is sad enough without having to read your thinly veiled sarcasm re "lord Obama". Please don't unnecessarily raise your backcountry brother's bloodpressure with your misdirected invective. Remember, courtesy is the norm here.

You want an answer to why the levees aren't repaired... it's because there are fishies in the river. That is the number one reason.

Considering the stress you must be under living next to that pile of river biscuits and drift logs, I found the Obama remark amusing. And I even voted for the poor devil!
So far, the gauge readings are running a bit below the projections:
ahps2.wrh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?...sw1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1
Paradise telemetry is showing 'only' about 2" rain in 8 hours and 5" lost at the snow stake. Maybe we'll all squeak through. Can everyone say 'runnels'?
