Avalanches in Utah kill 1 person, trap another was created by lordhedgie
Very little information, but it sounds like one person died after being recovered from an inbounds slide, and another is currently trapped under a sidecountry slide. The article seems hastily written, so I'm giving it a low accuracy potential at this point:

Here's some additional
info.
Apparently she was inbounds at Snowbird in an area (High Baldy) that had been opened since 9:30am (slid around 12:30pm)
However, this was the first opening of the area this season.
Thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved.

Absolutely terrible situation but a reminder that avalanches can occur( although rarely) in patrolled areas. I understand the situation it was a hike-to area but patrolled and controlled.
Joedabaker and I wore our beacons all the time during our recent trip to Alyeska as some of the areas we skied where being opened for the first time and when on the High traverse you have a huge snowfield above you. I wouldn't have worn it if we where just staying on the groomers but for some of the more rowdy areas, it seemed prudent.
Hope everybody who frequents the "sidecountry" at Crystal ( and other sidecountry areas)remembers to wear a beacon!
28 years old, how terrible for the family.

Another avalanche inbounds in Colorado, nobody injured this time:

Especially when big dumps come in early season before skiers pack down the base, the more open areas of ski areas are definitely avalanche terrain. I admit I generally don't bother with a beacon inbounds, but I have to admit there are times and places that I'll wear it inbounds.
