Actually saw such a thing and experienced it myself.

Quite a few years ago my wife and I, while visiting AK in Feb., drove up to Hatcher Pass to do some touring. We saw a guy descending and then just disappear for a brief time. Soon he popped up maybe 30ft or so later and then I realized that he had tunneled.

We went back a day later and skied in the same area and my wife saw me pull the same stunt. Very deep, very cold and I was on Fisher Europa 99s, a skinny ski.

And they say the powder is light and deep in the Wasatch.

Alan

Reminds me of a day years ago when my partner Mike and I went up to the ski area at Baker after a silly deep cold storm to get a dawn patrol run in before work; it was so deep we had to trade the break off every five minutes, as the lead guy was sinking almost to his abdomen on the cat track at the ski area. When we dropped in on Pan Dome, I remember only being able to see the prairie-dog tunnel track Mike's helmet was making - he was skiing down entirely below the surface of the pow. The run was surprisingly great - you'd get a tiny view every couple of turns, and it was just floating in rhythm.

Thought I'd add that it does happen in our back yard. Petey describes a couple of days I had at Alpental many years ago. Still looking for a repeat, tho I've come close a few times.
