GPS? was created by Dave_Schuldt
I have way points loaded into National Geographic Topo! but the
way
points aren't in the correct order. First there's the 100s then the 1,000s then
the 200s then
2,000s and so forth. When I try to create a route it zig zags all over. Way points recording is set on auto. Is there a setting somewhere on my GPS or in the program
that I
missed? I have Garmin GPSmap 60CSx and a Mac computer.
Thanks.

Using TOPO! on a PC, it's best to create your route using the "route tool." (It looks like a pencil.) Once you've drawn the free-hand route, you use the "GPS Route" command to create waypoints along the route. TOPO! will ask you how many waypoints you'd like and you can give them a common prefix. When you load this route into your GPS, all the waypoints will be navigated in order.
It is possible to create waypoints individually and then assemble them into a route, but it is much harder that way. (I think maybe that's what you're trying to do.)

lowell is right... I have the same gps and the mac version of NG TOPO, you just draw the route then tell it to make a # of waypoints along it. I have never experienced your particular issue before. hope you got it figured out.

Thanks, but it would be nice not to have to trace the route. It should be able to do it straight from the points that my GPS took while I was riding.

Dave - I'm not quite sure I am following what you are trying to do, but I seldom, if ever draw a route in NG Topo! and then have the program convert it to a series of waypoints in a route.
Instead I prefer to have a more simplified set of route waypoints which coincide with readily identifiable geographic locations and just keep me headed in the general intended direction.
So I just mark and name points on the map that appear to be likely recognizeable (streams/drainages, ridges at specific elevations, peaks, turning points, etc.) to provide a sort of skeletal framework for the planned route.
Then I build the route by going to "Handhelds>New GPS Route" which opens a new route folder. Then I select the waypoints, one at a time in the order of intended travel (starting with the one at the trailhead) by right clicking on each waypoint and then clicking on "Add to Active Route" until I have selected all the waypoints planned for the intended route.
Then I name the route and export it to the GPS and I'm good to go. I'm hoping this is what you are looking for. I also hope the mac version of Topo! works similarly.
I'm using NG Topo! (State Series) V4.5.0 (for PCs) and the GPSmap 60CSx
