Pretty sure it's true. Can't find an NPS page that says so, but,
community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/arch...4&slug=nwwtrailmix24

Heard it many times from many sources.

... the JVC was originally designed for a park in HI, but for some reason the couldn't build it, and not wanting the plans to go to waste, decided to use them at Rainier.  Anyone else heard this or can confirm this?

I've heard similar stories for decades, but they re "legend" according to Kurt Repanshek at
www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2008/11/en...ainier-national-park

Interesting that at two million it was the most expensive NPS VC ever built in 1966.  Now the replacement at 22 million is toward the low end compared to other major projects of the National Pork Service.  For example, the new Gettysburg Museum came in at $110,000,000   ???

If "Form follows function", then I guess the function of the HJVC was to wander around in circles...   It wasn't that bad, but I just have squareness in my mind when it comes to buildings.   The Space Needle, the King Dome (70'S), the Jetson's.... something was in the water in the Sixties.  I can't imagine a square Space Needle, but is is weird when you are up there.

But what is all this nonsense about the building fitting the setting?  Nothing fits the setting except a marmot hole.  Architecture is in our minds.... we have square minds.   And then "form follows function"...  like tall steep roofs so the snow falls off.
