That's why we do it.
Telemark has something that you cannot get from a.t.;
The downhill ride is completely different, it is a toe-side turn every time and is much more dynamic. It forces you to see and treat terrain differently. I would argue that this makes it a fuller experience. I a.t. about 50% for the ease and efficiency of touring, and tele the rest purely for the enjoyment (and the increased fitness is an admitted added benefit).
Sorry if this sounds defensive, it's not. I just haven't skied in a while and my jonesing is making me ...uh.....defensive.

Just getting my first tele skis tonight. I know how to alpine ski and AT ski, and am wondering if you guys know of any good books or other sources of information that would give me technique for this? I ski 1+ times a week and would get lots of practice, but have NO idea about how to even begin using telemark skis besides watching a few people use them on the mt.
thanks!
As mentioned above: Paul Parker's Free-heel skiing: telemark and parallel techniques published by the Mountaineers was my favorite guide.

Also found the videos from Urmas helpful: www.telemarktips.com/Lesson.htm
A tele friend you can call or ski with to answer questions is good too.

There is also an actual Telemark Tips website.
