Has anyone ever skied White Sands? was created by wolfs
I know that there is an occasional dune skiing contingent here, with destinations more likely to be Bruneau, the Florence area of the Oregon coast, or that scrappy sand slope (not really even a dune) just past Vantage on the way to Pullman. But I was particularly interested in what the dune skiing possibilities would be for White Sands. Hell, it even LOOKS kinda like snow, least more than the "yellow snow" of a typical beach dune does
Being under the purvey of the NPS, who have brought us the concepts of "volunteer flower arranger" and suspiciously too-late-for-snow road openings at one of their local sites, I was at first curious whether skiing as a whole on the dunes would be frowned upon. Not so! At least not if you extrapolate that skiing is just a more coordinated and advanced form of sledding .
The one variable I specifically was wondering about is that the White Sands dunes are made of gypsum, not quarzite, and the nature of the gypsum might be so much more grabby than regular sand that skiing / finding a skiable angle might be hard. Can anyone confirm or deny with actual on-the-gypsum experience?

I lived in New Mexico for 8 years prior to moving here. One weekend, my wife , son and I dragged a sled with full camping gear into the heart of the sands and camped. We coordinated our trip with a full moon and the experience of running around the dunes at midnight in light bright enought to read a newspaper by was amazing. My recollection was that the dunes where pretty grabby and the gypsum very fine and not a lot of relief. We did some sledding. A very amazing place. Good luck.

I have skied them. Nobody gave me any flack. They are pretty big dunes, I think the one I skied had like 500 feet of vertical. The surface itself was not that different than typical late-season sticky PNW cement, difference being that no amount of waxing is going to make it ski any faster.

I sledded there as a kid. Here's a Youtube video - not white sands, but probably similar.
