Man, in reference to that first video... if my friends ever took that long to get into gear I would be very, very upset. Turn the camera off, or just through it on the ground and get moving.

Ditto! Role playing, or more likely just talking about what happens after the slide, who's responsible for what, etc. would hopefully speed that shock/reaction curve being thrown off and action taken. Call it war gaming the worst case. And yes, THROW that camera and get searching!!! The "Return of the Nina" snowboard video referenced here last winter has some real scary footage in elf chutes where the film team is standing around with their heads up their arses after the rider across the valley takes a real nasty looking ride and doesn't come up. Talk through your emotions later.

2nd video ? "if you can stand the snowboard jibbing" ;)

I watched that slide footage 5 times, keeping my eyes out in the top frame for where/when the slab broke. Looks like, as near as I can tell, that the sharp toeside cut around the rock set the whole thing off. This makes sense in the context of weak points in relatively shallow snowpacks (looks like continental terrain, snow, depth?).

Interestingly enough, in the first video I thought the same principle looked like it contributed heavily, although the maritime pack kept taking the impacts for the first few riders, till the fateful drop.

That second one looked real bad, survival wise.....

Chris, according to the comments the guy, a 16 yr old from vermont, suffered a fractured patella and fibula but apparently survived. It was in  Cerro Cathedral, Argentina.  He was carried 1/4 mile and buried 3 ft deep but was dug out by friends and patrollers. Apparently, they tested the slope and were all avalanche savy.
