Looked up the avalancheguys on youtube as mentioned in a previous post, ( thanks for posting that) and saw all these guys using the Extended Column Test. Did some more googling on it  and found this that I think sums it up best.

The test makes sense to me as it not only shows fracture but propagation tendency. It seems a much better test than a pure compression test.

I believe there is some discussion about it, but I think I'm going to use it next winter.

I started doing these a couple of years ago. It takes a little more time, but it's a good test for sure, especially if you cut out a chunk, do a regular column, then do an ECT right next to it to put the results in perspective with what you're more familiar with...

TAR has published some good articles on how ECT results correlate with other test results and with actual stability conditions.

Makes sense to me too - I'd heard about it, but not seen it in practice until the avalancheguys videos. I definitely intend to incorporate it into my arsenal of snow assessment tools.
