Seattle to Adams S. Side: What route? was created by andyski
With Babyshoe Pass closed, is everyone taking I-5 to the Columbia and then heading east, or are there any inland/forest service road shortcuts available?

Andy - an alternate route to rd 23 & Baby Shoe Pass (about 4400) is the lower (about 4000) route through Elk Pass on rd 25 out of Randle (past Mt St Helens), then left on rd 90, then right on 88 (later 88 goes left at the "big tire T-bone") and a final left where 88 T-bones into the main road west of the Trout Lake RS.
I have found that the folks at the Randle RS seem to be the most knowledgeable as to whether or not that route is open.
My experience is that this route is about 20 -30 minutes slower than rd 23 (but with just a very short stretch of dirt road on 88) and about 20 - 30 minutes faster than the I-5/I-84 through Hood River route.
I tend to prefer going down through Randle if either of the above FS routes are open and then take the no brainer freeway route on the return trip.

I believe the alternative route Ron is referring to is actually washed out. When we headed down in mid June for the circumnav, we checked into it (Amar called) but unfortunately we had to drive the looooooooooooooooooong way. Over 500 miles from Bothell roundtrip. :-[

We called Randall RS last week and they advised the 23 is washed out and 25 is still under snow...they haven't even seen what the road looks like.....enjoy the time....be sure to pack your car full of people to spread out the gas $$ ! ! !

Yup, FS website says 25 is gated at junction with 99. Looks like its I-5 or 97. Thanks!

So coming from Seattle which way would you guys recommend based on 23 and 25 being closed? I prefer the HWY 97 drive heading south over I5.
