Best way to get started was created by transaman
Hello,
I am wondering what I should do to prepare for my first b/c (snowboarding) trip. I procrastinated this winter and I want to jump into it ASAP[I've been reading California B/C descents and an avy book, but have not taken the class]. I am going up to WA in the middle of August but would like to start earlier than that. I live in CA FWIW and do not have any friends or relatives that b/c ski(or ride). I have most of the general ski/board gear, I am wondering[gear-wise] if I should invest in a pair of snowshoes or a splitboard kit(I wear a 13 shoe and weigh ~250lbs, so there are very few snowshoes that are able to support me and a pack). Any suggestions or advice is very much appreciated, I would very much like to be in the E. Sierra's this time next year(or next month). Thanks.

Welcome. It sounds like you've got the enthusiasm for bc riding. There are a few things you need to do before going out.
1. Take an avy class. I can't stress this enough.
2. Find a partner. All the avy training in the world is useless if you get caught in one by yourself.
3. Buy a beacon, probe and shovel. These are necessary tools for the bc.
Since it is spring, you might have trouble finding the avy class. Reading avy books is a good start, but you need to take a class too.
I would be very cautious about splitting your board just yet. Wait until you've tried it for a season and that you like it enough to split your board. You can probably pick up some snow shoes real cheap on craigslist right now. MSR makes the Denali ascent that you can add on tails for extra float. Eventually you will want to get a splitboard, but hold off on the investment until you know you're into it for the long haul.
Good luck!

The next (affordable, junior college) avy class is in Dec. I am planning on taking it but would like to go ride before then. I have people who would go w/ riding and to the class, I wouldn't just do it myself. Thanks for the advice.

You're best bet to get started this season is probably to try and hook up with riders over at splitboard.com. there are a ton of riders over there that will take out beginners(to the bc). the snowpack is dwindling down there so best get on the ball. i second the recommendation for the MSR snowshow or try and get your hands on some Verts. They are lighter and are better for frontpointing and steep ascents. also, check ebay and craigslist for a used splitty. feel free to pm me if you have any questions

Thank you guys for all the help. I have checked out all of the MSR models and their max carry weight is significantly less than what I weigh. The only snowshoe I have found that would support me are the Crescent Moon 13's(? I think?). What is a Vert?
