I think it is pretty common for the summit area to have pretty poor skiing. If it's you're first time you would likely want to go to the summit but if not or you don't care about it or you want to save time (at least an hour) and energy you could just skip it entirely and not miss out on any good turns.

I'm sure it's probably pretty good this year, but if the Avy gulch route doesn't look good you could always ski the West face and traverse back to Horse camp. It has a lot more direct fall line skiing and is a decent way to get away from the hordes.
