Does anyone know if you can just walk in and camp at the closed campgrounds down at Rainier during the winter months? The MORA web site makes it sounds like the campgrounds are closed, but you can still camp on snow as long as there is enough snow. I guess maybe it makes more sense to drive up to the overnight parking by Narada and camp 300'+ off the road / parking lot. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure they don't want anyone camping in closed camp grounds.

Try calling the Rangers. Probably faster and more accurate then posting here.

Narada could be good; beware of tree bombs. The heated station is a true comfort...tends to be noisy in the AM when the equipment in those sheds is fired up. They don't like the public using the road while they're working & don't count on an early exit after a big dump. Might be worth asking for the gate combo (in case of 'medical', etc.) when you get your permit?

For true car camping with no bureaucracy, try any Forest Service turnout. There are some pleasant & convienient ones in the first half-mile of the Copper Ck road about two miles outside the entrance.
