Any consensus on rental car vs ski bus for SLC areas ? I'm heading out next week and am leary of spending 500 for a rental SUV. I looked at the bus maps and schedules and it seemed like a lot of waiting and transfers. Any one tried the SLC park and rides ?

I was at Solitude for 5 days last month and decided to forego a rental car in favor of staying put in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Van transport was easy to arrange and once we were there, I was happy to not have a rental car to worry about and drain my wallet while it sat in a lot most of the time. We hopped the bus for one day at Brighton and then skied back over to Solitude at day's end. There were specific times posted at our condo for bus rides between Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon resorts - it looked like you just needed to show up at a certain time in the morning for a dedicated run to Alta/Snowbird. I decided to not bother since we were having such a good time where we were, and plan on Alta for the next trip.
The Superpass gets you a free bus ride, so there was no hassling with exact change for the fare. And the buses are specifically equipped to serve skiers and boarders - check this for more: www.utabus.com/mediaRoom/pressReleases.aspx?pressReleaseID=642
By the way, Solitude was great and really suited the family/mixed ability/ski and snowboard aspects of the trip. Highly recommended!

There's great ski bus service from the base of the canyons and airport. The ? is...How easy will it be to get to the ski bus. Good pub tran, but may require transfers. If it's all about skiing, find a motel near the ski bus P&R

Just got back from SLC .
If you are flying in and staying in one of the canyons don't rent a car.Take the shuttles to your base in the canyon of your choice.
Want to backcountry ski and staying in Big cottonwood ? Bus stops at Spruces coming and going and I imagine a few other places up and down the canyon. same for Little cottonwood .Park and rides are along Watsatch drive and at the entrances to both big and little cottonwood.
Now, one reason to rent a car and big one is Powder Mountain and Snowbasin.
Ski midweek if you can !
Robbal and Zap was right ski Solitude and especially Honeycomb Canyon there. Snow bird and Alta are too crowded for my tastes but there are certainly reasons to go there.
Backcountry guide books are available online , at Wasacth Touring downtown salty lake and Black Diamond. "Wasatch Tours Vol 2" .
IT's very possible to do BC Canyon to canyon and intercanyon tours using the bus.
Have fun !

Thanks gang, just rolled back in from Crystal . Off to SLC tomorrow as soon as the laundry is done, for t Snowbird . Changed to a hotel right at the bus line, was cheaper than the EAS+car rental. Look forward to riding instead of driving. Thanks again.
