Please forward this message on to contacts you
may have who may be interested in the Mt. Baker Climbing Ranger Position. I
am recruiting for two positions and looking for skilled mountaineers who
are also very capable with public contacts and encounters.

The Vacancy Announcement for the positions is scheduled to open Friday,
February 29, and will remain open until Friday, March 7.
The Vacancy Announcement Number is DE-PNW-0462-5.
It will be advertized at www.usajobs.gov starting 2/29/2008.
Search for it by the Vacancy Announcement #, the series (0462), and the
Location (Glacier, WA).
Build your application in www.avuecentral.com .

I expect the positions to start the end of May, the payperiod begins on
May 25, but I would probably start the position on the following
Tuesday, the 27th, as it would be difficult to start someone on Memorial
Day Weekend, (May 24-26). One position would be through mid-September,
the other probably through the end of September.
Work week generally runs Friday-Monday, 4 -10 hour (often times longer)
days. At the beginning of the season mid-week training occurs and needs
to be accommodated in the schedule.
The climbing season on Mt. Baker starts usually mid-May, peaks during
June/July, slows down by August and is but a trickle come September. Of
course, snow pack depth helps determine the start of the season, and
this year we seem to have a heavy snow pack, which may push the climbing
season start time out. If this occurs, I may push the start date out to
June 8.
Just about every weekend will be spent on the mountain (hiking trails,
patrolling base camps, talking to people) but not every weekend will
have a summit climb.
This position will conduct performance evaluations on the guides
operating on Mt. Baker, and other locations around the forest.
Will require working with volunteers and setting up a volunteer climbing
ranger program.
Maintenance of approximately 15 30 gallon vault toilets at various camps
on the mountain is a part of the position.
Public contacts focus on education of safe mountain climbing practices,
LNT, regulations and general information about trails, camps, and route
conditions.
Trail maintenance, campsite clean up and other duties as assigned are
considered part of the position.
