I've always flown with mine in carry-on, as the antennae are fragile and I've seen how they throw my checked luggage around. No problem yet, though I've had to tell a couple of domestic airport staff what it is. The German and French security people seem to be familiar with them. You probably should remove the batteries before you go.

I flew to SLC with mine recently and will be doing it again soon too. I had it in my carry on, which is also my BD avalung pack, which makes a very iteresting picture on the xray. I just put the beacon in the bin along with my cell phone and other electronic devices before going through security and it was fine going both ways.

There was a report on TTips about having a beacon confiscated by the TSA; I did a search but can't seem to sieve it out. Maybe a one-off incident?

That sucks but is not too surprising; these things can be unpredictable.

In a previous career (fisheries technician), I used to fly fairly regularly out of Seatac with a bunch of electronic gadgetry in the carry on (survey-grade gps, flow meter, laser rangefinder, etc).  Sometimes the guards would examine the stuff, question us about it, etc, but sometimes they wouldn't say/notice a darn thing.   ::)

One of the times that they didn't question us, I asked to talk to the security manager and told him about the inconsistencies we'd experienced thereof, and that basically.... either some guards were allowing security breaches, OR some were being over-diligent.

Granted, all of this was pre-911, but I can imagine that the same sort of thing (inconsistencies in approach to beacons et.al) could happen today.
