We were out for a little tour just outside of the Mt. Baker Ski area on Monday, Feb. 18, and it appeared to us that a HUGE chunk of the Mt. Shuksan Hanging glacier just left of the White Salmon glacier (as you're looking at it from the Mt. Baker ski area) had broken off.  My guess is that it happened in the last two weeks.  Of course, it could have all been an optical illusion...had anyone else noticed this or heard anything about it?

Haven't been up in a while, but I have witnessed the glacier break off and avalanche down the valley in prior years. What a beauty to witness. When I was camped out last year, I was awoken in the middle of the night by a Huge avalanche that sounded like a jet for over a minute.

I spent the winter of 1990 at Mt. Baker working as a chairlift operator and used to spend many bored hours gazing at Mt. Shuksan while on top-shack duty. One sunny afternoon from the perch at lift 5, I watched that enire face calve off and rumble down the valley. It was spectacular, but probably not that uncommon.

Maybe some of the current Baker regulars have some insight.
