Thank you muchly for the heads-up, Mike! I can't imagine how unhappy folks would be to be turned back at Longmire on a sunny, comparatively avy safe, and spring-like weekend because the toilets didn't work.
Can't you just post a big 'ol sign at the gate at Longmire that states that there are no "facilities" at Paradise and that those caught defecating without a blue bag will be subject to the wrath of the NPS?
It's unfortunate that the absence of functioning toilets should prevent access to a large Cascade volcano on a sunny weekend in February when the road's already been plowed out. Isn't the idea to experience nature?
That said, I'm aware of the long-term effects of ushering a gaggle of folks to Paradise without having somewhere to focus waste. Poo sticks around for a long time.

Thanks Mike. The snowfall totals are cool to know. As a kid skiing up there I was always proud that rainier had the record, and still as an adult, I would be excited to see baker lose the crown.
621 is still far from 1140 and 500 more inches would be verrrry nice
. How much do you think is lost to compaction etc? I'd imagine almost half in week?

The agument still doesn't hold water. Close the building, not the road. Just a cry from the masses.

The Park phone message was revised at 2PM Saturday to say that the Paradise road WOULD be open on Sunday, no time given...

I thought this site was for tough backcountry ski folks? Didn't you realize that the Westside Road was available, with access to the upper mountain and TONS of skiable snow? What's the old saying, "earn your turns.”
Sky seemed to have a good trip anyway despite water issues at Paradise... I put a few of his images up... www.mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com .
