I still use the original long style of leash because I hold the end while I engage the boot into the binding. There have been many instances where I have to engage the binding on a steep slope and there is not a large platform or the snow is too firm to jam the tails into the snow. I've seen a few skis take a free ride without an operator while trying to engage the binding.
