Skinny skins or kicker skins? was created by Charlie Hagedorn
I'm about to head off on a xc-oriented hut trip in the Methow with some friends in a couple of weeks. A quick survey of the topography near the hut suggests that I'd be crazy not to bring my usual randonee skis for some off-track exploration. Thus, I'm poking around for ways to speed myself up on the flats and on moderate terrain.
Are skinny skins, kicker skins, or (gasp) wax more appropriate for such an endeavor? Am I apt to lose a skinny skin while Dyna-teleing down groomed tracks at speed?
Thanks!

I have used kicker skins periodically but the small plastic wedge that is on the front of the skin hampers any significant glide. Lowell has used skinny skins in various posts and seems pleased with their performance.

I ski on Works stinks and use 50mm skins Or Swix V40 Blue Xtra kicker wax for just what you are talking about. See the wax thead further down on Random tracks. Of course i also carry trim to fit skins as well. I don't always take the 50mm skins just as needed. Chances are you can pick them up at Gear sales. Never used the kicker skins so can't say any good or bad about them.

Ok, this might sound a little crazy :
, this past Sunday At Crystal after yo-yoing different areas, we ended up in a place that was mostly flat with a tiny uphill grade, with no skin track. It was just enough of an uphill and in deep enough snow that you couldn't skate up it, so we put one skin on and left the other skin off. Used the old "scooter" method, pushing off with the skin ski and gliding with the other. Worked very well, and was actually quite fun

I'm nearly certain that you'll do better with the swix blue extra on those groomed trails over there. Groomed trails - especially the grooved skating zone - or any track that has been freshly churned up, is where the kick wax shines. It's gotta be cold though. What's ironic is that the stuff works really well in a track after a snowshoer has churned it up a bit - as long as there's no postholing. I know I'm not supposed to love snowshoers, but that's another thread. I've never locked my heels down so I'm not sure how it works with the free pivot on rando, but I'm sure it's better than nothing. Anyway, it won't hurt to try. Forget the kicker or narrow skins and just bring your usual wide full length skins just in case it warms up a bit.
We were over in the Wallowas last week and I was amazed at how well the blue extra was working. It was in the low teens and at times even single digits so we really had to make sure we shuffled the snow off the bases before starting a downhill run. But other than that it worked great. There were a couple instances where the few of us with kick wax never had to put on our skins to do a little uphill traverse to the next ridge. Not sure why more people don't use the stuff. If I were a ski guide I'd require it for all my clients, as well as the other guides.
