Stupid Avalanche Control Techniques was created by savegondor
Posted in Wikipedia with dubious Defense Department sources I nevertheless was dreaming up such an instrument myself.  The Vortex Ring Gun:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_Ring_Gun

Basically, the Vortex Gun shoots a sonic pulse powerful enough to knock a man down ten meters away.  My sources tell me such a device could be redesigned for experienced BC skiers and would have a variety of helpful and usefull functions:

1) Etiquette Education: Unwary snowshoers could be "redirected" before they make otherwise fatal decision to walk up the skin track.

2) Shoot a start zone with a sonic blast to check stability.

3) Blind competetors at Baker's "Ski to Sea" race with powder snow via snowbombs from shaking up the trees with a sonic blast.

4) Manage snowboard heel sliders by repurposing their vertical momentum to horizontal momentum and thus better anchor snow to steep exposed slopes.

5) Perform real-time 'speed checks' at ski areas.  No need to write a ticket...just slow people down with a friendly nudge.

6) A cigarette neutralizer aimed at stopping all underage "punks" from smoking (by puffing those recycled rollies right out!) and thus from littering their spent cigarette butts all over MRNP or the Cowboy Ridge at Stevens.

Any other ideas welcome!

Nice suggestions-
At Snowbasin they use a similar tool for avi control called the Gazex .
Pretty cool way of handling frequently loaded areas from a controlled environment.

Now we just need a pocket sized version. It would be an interesting debate should the technology ever arrive to handhelds if and when they should ever be used.

A friend was describing something similar to that Gazex thing at Val Torens. I guess I should apologize for thinking he was crazy.

I've thought about why people dont handle bc avy control themselves. It wouldnt be hard to make your own explosives. The only problem I really see with it is you have know way of knowing if there are other people lower down on the slope. So even if they made a handheld version, I dont think it would be safe to just set slides off. I personally would be worried on the skin up if there was a chance someone above was doing avy control. Anybody else feel the same way???

why do i suddenly have visions of idiots on skis with packs of explosives?  (didn't seem like a good idea in Vertical Limit)

"strap on the nitroglycerin, I'm going touring today!"

i'm just gonna stick to ski cutting & chopping cornices when available...
