Washington Pass conditions in January was created by jdclimber
I am working on putting together a trip up to Washington Pass via Mazama. Having trouble getting good information concerning road snowmobilablilty. I think once we get there we can figure it out in terms of snow conditions and such, but it sounds a bit interesting just sledding down the road with drifts and Avy run out.
Does anyone know if you can come up from the West side? Or of any snow mobile group that would know the conditions from the east.

Your ability to make it all the way to the hairpin at the pass will depend on the depth of snow at the time of your trip, as well as the capability of your sled and your snomo skilz. That said, a lot of Methow locals sled in as far as the Cutthroat Creek turnoff to ski up in the Cutthroat Pass basin, so there will likely be a track in to that point. North Cascade Mountain Guides takes clients up there fairly frequently, so you could probably call them for beta just prior to your trip. Also, I believe that snomos go in from the W side fairly frequently, at least as far as Rainy Pass. Beyond that, the avy and terrain issues (aggressive sidehilling required, most likely) multiply quickly. Never done that trip myself, but plan to give it a shot sometime this season.

There's a group of people going out this weekend to ride highway 20. There starting at the ross lake gate. They will be stopping before washington pass due to slide paths. From what I get traveling through the hairpin turn at washington pass isnt a good idea. After looking at the pics the wsdot posted last season of the liberty bell runout I wouldnt venture into the hairpin turn area. But yes you can snowmobile hwy 20 from either direction.

Thanks for the info. Would love to hear when/if people turned back from either side and why. Would be great to hear from the group from this coming weekend.
As to camping at the hairpin, what I really mean is the general area. No way any quality time will be spent at the hairpin proper, sort of a gun it and pray even in great conditions.
Tents would be pitched in a 100% safe location in terms of avy danger, likely near blue lake TH or the million dollar outhouse on the North side of the hwy.

Going in from the west side should be straightforward, if long (>20 miles to Rainy Pass). Only problems you might encounter are 1) lack of snow on the road (it drops to 1700ft), which is probably not an issue right now, or 2) debris from the Ruby Mtn chutes covering the road at the start - might happen after a big pineapple express or something. Don't think there are any big chutes that hit the road between Ruby mtn and WA Pass.
