If you have a top-loading pack, try cutting a piece of ensolite to fit inside against your back...great for sunny day lounging or sitting on in an emergency...the remaining piece is perfect for those of us dinos that still put on chains...

The other day I climbed up East Peak in a clear sky and as I hiked the clouds compressed the top 2/3 of the hill and got a little thick. I hiked on knowing the area very well, but revamped my approach and stayed in some trees instead of doing my usual crest and go over the east side and traverse to the summit. Because I was by myself and did not want to get disoriented in the thick fog with less tree cover. I stopped at a familiar spot and was going to ski a different aspect down than my approach, starting in the fog as I skied it did not look familiar (even though it would have been OK), so I traversed back and skied a regular route out of the fog to the summer trail. Whew no problems, I understand fog and snow happens even on easy approaches! I even set compass points on nice days in case the fog rolls in and I need to white cane my way out.

Thanks to Joe and all those who took risks volunteering to search for Randy.
It is a tribute again to TAY's members.

I did a little web search because the Randy Traxberger story seemed familiar to one I heard last year at Hurricane Ridge.
In fact it is nearly the same story! 1st story of being lost last year

Um, it's not nearly the same story. It is the same story. Look at the date on this thread. leonardwalsh19 resurrected it.

I never noticed the date on the report, and thought that the story seemed familiar as I read them both. Thanks for pointing out the obvious Lowell. I like it better when someone says hey you got crap in your teeth rather than letting me walk around with it all day.
Well there is no way rationalizing this error.
I amended my glib and please accept my deepest apologies to Randy and his friends of my assumption that it happened twice in 16 months.
Oh what a silly boy am I...

My greatest fear would be getting lost or stranded in cold harsh weather without the right stuff to make it through a night. That picture of that gal sleeping in that emergency bag getting a restful sleep does not represent what I would be doing or feeling if I really had to use one of those bags.
