wind closing chairs? was created by weezer
I'm trying to figure out my choices for wed. With a high wind warning going into effect,
What kind of gust will shut down Rex,
Shut down Chair 2 at alpy,
or shut down the upper chairs at Baker.
I'll be checking the telemetry in the AM. Thanks And trying to beat the storm to the parking lot :)

That is always a difficult call.
Last year Crystal implemented a pre-wind closure based on the potential for predicted high winds. So they closed the upper mountain based on the day before NWAC report, giving their employees heads up and not bringing them in for the next day. They did not tell the customers of that plan still begging people to come up and ski for full price. Well, I think Crystal got some heat when the word got around that employees were forewarned of their plan, but not customers. So they started telling customers that the upper lifts would be closed due to the potential for high winds and offered reduced rates for the lower hill lifts only. Then the winds never came and the upper mountain was on "Weather Hold"- That means Weather they made the right call or not. So, we would circle like vultures waiting for the upper lifts to open, with the same response that they were waiting for the winds to die. While we were standing around in no wind, the type where one could start a campfire using damp kindling and paper matches!
Uhh...that plan kind of backfired, so lets see what they will do this year.
For Rex-It kind of depends on the direction that the wind is coming from and how much swing the chair is getting from crosswinds. They will usually roll REX chair if the wind is from the west or east in higher winds.
Sustained winds from the SE at 30-35mph can close REX, but todays telemetry, showed SW wind gusts in the 50's and from what I hear they kept it rolling all day and had sporadic closures on chair 3. Predictions are for higher winds Weds.
That has to make your decision process a little easier ???

REX ran all day today, and telemetry shows a high gust of 57. Green Valley did close for a while. Not sure if that's because of wind, or some other reason.

It's pretty reliable that Double Diamond and the backside are closed at Stevens on wind days; they seem pretty conservative about it. This is the secret to getting the goods...go the day after the storm and there may be 2 days worth of untouched.

Ha, ha, I got stuck on the Liberator at Mission for 40 minutes today. Sustained winds of 40-50 mph with gusts to low 70s. Being pelted with snow for 40 minutes on an exposed chairlift is very entertaining. I was stuck near the bottom, I can't imagine how the poor souls near the top survived, it was just vicious as I crested the last rise. Complete whiteout at the summit, chairs blowing sideways at about 30 degree angle. They shut it down after they got everyone off. Other than that, good skiing. Things are filling in nicely.
