Oh, yes, I just remembered: I had asked about others experience with digital cell phones in the mountains but forgot to mention that some digital phones are dual mode. That is, when they cannot get a digital signal they revert to analog. Analog service still exists, but only for a few more months. So the question is what's the reception area of digital only service.

Analog has a better coverage area because it has been around 20+ years as compared to digital which has been around far less time. I purchased a couple of 40-channel hand held CB's on ebay to use for emergency in the woods because their AM frequency travels much further then GMRS/FMS type radio's and no need to worry about cell tower reception. Used 40 channel cb radio's are fairly inexpensive and many of them also have weather band channels too.
