Approach Skis was created by AndyP
A friend is interested in approach skis for backcountry snowboarding.  Does anyone have any recommendations for approach skis and where they can be found in the Seattle area?

I'd also be interested in thoughts about how these compare to other means for backcountry snowboard travel?

This often stirs up a quagmire. Try a search for similar topics from years past. splitboard.com has some great info also.

I have the K-2 with the older style snow-shoe type plastic binding. The binding is a big problem as it doesn't give the lateral stability necessary when climbing. It also requries duck tape to keep the extra strap from getting caught on the other binding. The ladder strap also slips a few notches so that once and awhile the strap becomes too loose and the boot slips out. The newer ones have an extra strap to prevent this.
The benefit on some tours was that the siberian husky pal of mine was willing to pull the empty board while I cruised up on my approaches.
Beginning of last season I switched to a *brand new* Split Decision that I had scored, with skins, for $100 bucks at a windsurf swap. Too good to be true? Yes; it was a 10 year old version. Very stiff with no upturn in back. Scary, actually. I sold it to another unsuspecting person.
I took the plunge to a Prior Kyber last winter. Took awhile to get a hold of one from factory. I tried it at the resort a few times and it felt heavy and not as twisty as I would like. Put pressure on my yet to be repaired ACL knee so I bagged it until this post repair season. I will post separately on my experience.
