I am going to be in Salt Lake City for 4 days in January and I will have one free day to go skiing. I am going to bring my own gear and I would love to experience the backcountry in the Wasatch, but I think I am going to go lift accessible since I will be borrowing a friends SUV. Can anyone make some recommendations for lift accessible terrain near Salt Lake City? ...Or even talk me into the backcountry!!

Snowbird or Alta (skiers only!) would be my SLC picks, the former being my favorite.  If you hit up Snowbird, head directly to Mineral Basin (back side or resort), but great inbounds terrain on the front side too… the high lift drops you off at 11K elevation, how awesome is that (try not to get too spoiled ;D)… you will not be disappointed!

i never get bored of snowbird. plus, they built this really cool tunnel through the mountain last year, so mineral basin is even easier to access. have a great trip! :)

One day, max out at Alta or Snowbird.here's hoping you get a dump.in which case you wouldn't want to be in the BC.

If I had only one day to ski near SLC, I would consider Big Cottonwood Canyon and riding the lifts to ski Solitude, specifically Honeycomb Canyon.  Most folks think of Alta and Snowbird for good reasons and there is great terrain and lots of competition for that terrain.  When I ski and tour at Solitude, I meet a lot of folks who work at Alta and Snowbird.  Checkout the December issue of Skiing and the 2 page spread of Honeycomb Canyon. Also, checkout Tyson Bradley's book "Backcountry Skiing Utah".  There is a lot of terrain in the Brighton backcountry and if you have a Big S Unlimited Plus pass or Crystal pass, you can ski free at Brighton which has all high speed quads.
