(so sorry for posting in the wrong forum, that is the problem with having multiple tabs open in your browser)

Thanks for the insight! I love my Nitro Pantera, but I guess for more adventurous outings I need to expand my quiver with a split board. I will do some research on what is available this year, but any advice on shopping for a split board is appreciated.

Looks like the mountaineers have an avy training course starting in November, and I know Baker runs some in January. Are there any other courses available in the area that would be recommended?

Gary Brill (who posts here fairly often) runs a great course that (when I took it) was semi-affiliated with REI. Sign up early, as it fills pretty quickly.

The Washington Alpine Club also offers a backcountry travel course that covers avalanche safety (transceiver use, snow and route assessment, etc) as well as snowcamping. It's not offered until February though so the season will be well underway by then, but if the other classes don't pan out, this one exists too.

I took the ASAP avy safety class last year at Baker, and I thought it was really great. The instructor Michael Jackson really knows his stuff. One big lesson that sinks in early: Take a class like this if you don't want to die.

The web site does not say what days the classes are offered, but it's good to ask anyway. The one I took last year was actually a private class for a group that consented for me to join.

Another bennie from the Washington Alpine Club is that some of us splitboarders usually help out in the class. If a splitboard section is offered again for 2008, they'll probably review transition tips to help splitboarders not unduly weigh down their skiing brethren and uh, sisthren ...

Also check out this forum www.splitboard.com - lots of threads and information regarding splitboards (and several TAYers post as well here).
