August turns near Ruth was created by Jon Garrison
I am trying to plan a short (day trip or one night) adventure for my August turns.

I have pretty easygoing expectations as far as the joy-o-meter is concerned. I was up near Artist point  a few weeks ago, just before they finished plowing the parking lot (almost got sprayed by the plow!) and just skied a couple patches and called it good. Of course, I had some great turns on the fourth of July above Spray Park, so the "second" July turns were more of a "take the gear for a walk so it doesn't get lonely in the garage" trip.

This week, however, I want to bring my lady along, and she is one of those odd people you see with giant packs WITHOUT skis on them. She actually likes backpacking, and camping, without the ski bonus. She does of course ski well, and is fine with the whole patches thing, but I want to find something with a bit more adventure than running up from Paradise or Artist Point and milking the first patch longer than my apartment.

I don't want anyone giving up secret stashes on the internet (though a PM would be great...) I am just wondering if anyone has been up towards Ruth Mtn (the SR542 one) lately, or this time of year. Is there anything left up there worth puttering around on? I don't mind a hike in with camping gear, but on the other hand I am all for car camping.

So. Ruth this time of year? Or similar suggestions? Thanks in advance, TAY people (and the nwac telemetry) more than make up for the rest of the internet.

Thanks!!!

Jon

Good skiing up there. Go for it. The hike is easy and there are lots of nice places to camp...definitely good to put around!!!

Thanks Jason- and Oyvind- the hike was easy and the snow was great.  I worried for a bit, without telling Marian of course, that there was some sort of modifier for "easy hiking" when it came from one of these Hummels I have been reading about.

I couldn't believe I was at the same elevation roughly as Cowboy Mtn, above Stevens pass; I guess location is key...

Not that I am complaining, but the blackflies, deerflies, and mosquitoes were pretty, well, dense. Or hellish. I am from the Midwest, and so have seen worse, but we didn't really stop for more than 20 seconds below Hannegan pass on the way up or down, to keep from being chewed on. Still worse the price of admission, though.
